With many years of experience in professional firms, the commercial and profit-for-purpose sectors, and as a director and chairman, I love thinking about the best way to run boards and organisations.

My observation from this journey is that the last decade has upped the ante significantly on boards, directors, and chairs. The rate of change is unprecedented – and it is accelerating.

At the beginning.

Setting up your core systems and processes for accountability, transparency and responsiveness is so important. It is imperative to start in the manner that you intend to continue. Building solid foundations for the business is much better than having to go back and re-engineer later on.

Moving to this new level is about establishing your credentials in public about your organisation and its leadership. You need to claim the right to be trusted to comment in the public discourse.

Standing further back – as an impartial observer, or an independent non-executive director – I provide genuine and balanced commentary on issues around social licence and your public leadership.

This is not management theory or legalese. It is honest and clear commentary that is practical for boards, chairs and directors wanting to build their organisations up as community leaders and sector influencers.

And then, it is not over…

This journey goes on, no matter where you and your organisation are at.

The board, the chair and the directors need to build this thinking into the DNA of the organisation.

As an active sponsor of these processes, I act as an ongoing prompt to the board to continue the process of constant renewal, curiosity and watching what is going on in the world.
